Blind Cricketers Win in Wolverhampton

Australians aren’t the only cricketers celebrating recent success. The Worcestershire Elizabethans blind cricket team are upbeat after winning their inaugural match against visually impaired players in Wolverhampton.

The hosts made 79-2 from 10 overs. Worcestershire Elizabethans replied emphatically reaching the target without losing a wicket and with a couple of balls to spare.

Old Elizabethans CC breathed new life into Worcestershire blind cricket last summer when weekly development sessions began at the Memorial Ground in Perdiswell. Funded by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire and coached by sports students from the University of Worcester, the squad welcomes male and female players of all ages and abilities who are blind and share a love of cricket. Training continued throughout the winter thanks to a partnership with the New College Worcester school for the blind.

Blind Cricket was started in England in the 1940s as a means of recreation for injured servicemen.

To find out more about blind cricket go to www.bcew.co.uk

Outdoor coaching sessions have started at Old Elizabethans Cricket Club on a Wednesday evening from 6.30 to 8pm. Anyone is welcome.
